The PORSCHE MYSTIQUE
As I prepare to meet my new Boxster tomorrow after a brief eleven month wait I find myself remembering a similiar event 20 years ago. When I was a young boy I remember my father being fascinated by the "Porsche" mystique. When on vacation he would always point out 911's (and 914's) and say "one day I will have one". Then in 1997 my father became the proud owner of a white, limited edition 924. It was Beautiful! Never before had I seen a car with such captivating lines. Everywhere we went the 924 was admired by people wanting to know more about it. The sensation was very "Boxster" like. In later years my father moved on to the 911, however the 924 had a special place in my heart as the first Porsche I ever rode in or drove. That is probably why I ordered two last December from our local dealer. Dad got his Guards Red 986 in March and now comes my turn. I'm planning on taking my seven year old daughter with me to pick up the Boxster. Hopefully she will have as much fun with the Boxster and me as I had with my father in that 924. Thank you Porsche for all the joy you've given my family over the years, and hopefully for many more to come. And thank you Porsche Pete for giving us a place to learn and relate about our common passion. My dad drove (still drives) a plum(purple) 74 911 carrera that now has ~500,000 miles!!!!! I was 8 when it he rolled the odometer to 100,000miles and subsequently 2,3,400,000 miles( of which i was behind the wheel) and 500,000miles. I learned how to drive in that car! We even started racing that car at 260,000 miles with no mods to the engine of suspension and we won our events often times beating more powerful cars including other 911's. since then my dad has purchaced many other 911's but that little purple 911 has a sacred spot in my heart. Presently its being rebuilt to alomost concours level. I say almost because we intend to keep racing it on weekends. But i intend to go to the dealership with the video camera and with my dad(who is drooling over the 996,,,and has the cash to buy one,,,,i wish i did) and drive that puppy home! I hope that this Boxster will last as long as that little purple 911. I hope when i get married and have kids They can experience the same feeling i did. But first things first......U gotta have your priorities straight,,,,,,the car first,,,,,,,,,,,the kids last! Robert |
