The PORSCHE MYSTIQUE

ribbonDream becomes reality tomorrow (very long)
Posted by Rene Weenink on Thursday, 2 April 1998, at 3:07 p.m.

Just my course of live after seeing the first pictures. (Sorry for the length and my bad English)

The first time I saw a picture of the Boxster was in a magazine (Auto Zeitung nr. 16, July ‘96) which I actually bought for a test of the SLK, Alfa spider and Z3. The nice Boxster poster added to the magazine immediately attracted my attention. It was love at first sight ! However, far beyond the investment we had in mind. No problem, lots of other nice sports cars. So we looked for MG-F, Alfa GTV, SLK, Z3, ....... but all of these failed in some way : they didn’t match that image tattooed on my eyes. One day I plucked up courage and drove with my wife to the nearest Porsche dealership. We were informed that in The Netherlands the car will be introduced the 26th of October ‘96 and we would receive an invitation. The salesman gave two awesome pictures of the Boxster, a brochure was not yet available. At that time we didn’t know but for both of us the point of no return was already passed. Our interest for this car was growing and growing. We were invited for the premiere at the dealership on the evening of the 25th. A nice ambience, about 20 invitees but the most important of those present : two 986’s, one in Guards Red, the other in Ocean Blue. The total impression of this car exceeded our expectations. The dealer offered a test-drive which we did about 10 days later. Got the car in the afternoon and the salesman suggested to bring it back next morning ! I already spend a night with this baby, 17 months ago! Now we were really considering to place an order. Still some hesitation regarding the costs. Most important however, we felt that if we decided to buy, everything had to be perfect, including the desired date of delivery (spring). Unfortunately, delivery appeared to be not possible before summer vacation so we postponed the order until August ‘97 for a March delivery. In the mean time I bought a UT 1:15 scale model to keep the dream alive. At invitation of Porsche-NL we enjoyed a factory tour in November ‘97. For me, most impressive was to watch the engine assembly and “Die Hochzeit” when engine/gearbox/axles/suspensions and body are put together in one process stage. In Nov’97 I bought new Yokohama tires for my Mazda MX-3. Accidentally at the tire specialist I saw a folder of Yokohama announcing a contest for The Netherlands. A purchase receipt and a slogan was required to compete. Prize for the winner : a Tamiya radio controlled Boxster, scale 1:10 (complete package). Normally I hate this kind of contests but with this prize I couldn’t resist. Guess what, after 3 months the General Manager of Yokohama Netherlands gave me a call that I was the winner ! The same day I received the packet by mail. No experiences with this stuff before but building and driving appeared to be a lot of fun. When the 1:1 scale is there, maybe both can be driven side by side at the same time: one driving the 1:1, passenger driving the 1:10.

Our Boxster obsession (yes, my wife with some delay shares the same obsession) now lasts 20 months. It became a way of living. No single day without Boxster thoughts or whatever (playing with models, visiting the dealership for at least 20 times). And of course there always was THIS EXCELLENT BOARD. The greatest encouragement were *YOU*, THE CONTRIBUTORS.

PORSCHE PETE, THANKS VERY MUCH FOR THIS OPPORTUNITY !

Tomorrow the dream becomes reality. I’ll have my baby in Zenith blue (sorry for those .....)/ Mblue/Mblue. I have to adapt to a new way of living. It feels like I have to say farewell to a very exciting period but I know for sure (thanks to this board) that life after delivery is even better than before. Thanks again for all your input.

Rene.

P.s. Delivery of my car coincides with the commemoration of Dr. Ing. Ferdinand Porsche in Stuttgart. I’ll remember him also during delivery of my Boxster tomorrow.
